Here in Romania we don't celebrate Halloween like other nations do and especially Americans. But I would definitely love to see what its like to dress up in a costume and go trick-or-treating! So these 5 days until Halloween I will post different things related to this subject.
First thing....its history!
-origin of the name:The word
Halloween is first attested in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even ("evening"), that is, the night before All Hallows Day;
-symbols: the carving of jack-o'-lanterns springs from the souling custom of carving
turnips into lanterns as a way of remembering the souls held in purgatory.
The turnip has traditionally been used in Ireland and Scotland at Halloween
, but immigrants to North America used the native pumpkin, which are both readily available and much larger – making them easier to carve than turnips. Another specific symbol is of course costuming and going trick-or-treating. All children receive fruits and candy
(as far as I know). The most desired costumes include monsters, skeletons, witches and ghosts.
I have no idea in what i would dress up, but I bet it would be fun!
